This is a newer hair
mineral analysis pattern that has been discovered only since Dr. Paul EckÕs
death in 1996. It has been
observed many times, since then, and the incidence of the pattern appears to be
increasing, in fact.
The pattern is
present whenever the calcium/magnesium ratio in a hair sample that has not been
washed at the laboratory is greater than about 13.5:1. The pattern may not be present if the
calcium/magnesium ratio is greater than about 35 to 40. To explain it, let us consider the
Ca/Mg ratio in more detail.
This ratio was
called by Dr. Paul Eck, the blood sugar
ratio. This is because he
found that when it is imbalanced, either too high or too low, the person was
always exceeding his carbohydrate tolerance level, meaning eating more
carbohydrates than are optimal for the particular person.
I propose that the
name of the ratio may be better called the Lifestyle
Ratio. This would be more
inclusive, meaning it has to do with the diet, but also with oneÕs lifestyle or
attitude.
This new pattern is
still being researched. However,
when the calcium/magnesium ratio is above about 13.5 on an initial hair mineral
analysis, the following appears to be the case:
1. It
is not about the carbohydrates in the diet, or only about the diet. This is important as the elevated Ca/Mg
previously was thought to relate only to the amount of carbohydrates in the
diet.
It is possible that
the carbohydrates are excessive and one is exceeding oneÕs carbohydrate
tolerance, but the spiritual defensiveness pattern means far more than this.
2. It
has to do with a factor in a personÕs lifestyle or attitude that no longer
serves the person. This might be:
A. A personal
relationship that is not working well for a person. This is a large subject that we will comment on later in
more detail.
B. A work or
job-related relationship or situation that is not working to the personÕs best
interest.
C. Another
relationship, including a relationship with alcohol, for example, or an
attitude, which is a relationship with an idea in oneÕs head.
D. It may have to do
with a generally sloppy or disorganized lifestyle, rather than a particular
lifestyle factor.
E. In some cases, it
may just be an illness indicator, especially if the ratio is greater than 35 to
40.
3. This is a very
important pattern for counseling a client. If we see this pattern, often there is a situation that
needs changing. It is a need to let go pattern. If we do not see the pattern, even a
seemingly difficult marriage or work situation is more likely not really in
need of changing as much. This is
an exciting and very important distinction that is discussed in a separate
article on this site entitled, Spiritual
Defensiveness Versus Sympathetic Dominance.
4. Not as true on
retests. The
spiritual defensiveness pattern is not nearly as valid on retests. The reason is that on a retest hair
analysis, an elevated calcium/magnesium ratio often indicates the elimination
of biounavailable calcium or what is called Òmetastastic calciumÓ from the body through the hair. This is excess calcium that was
beginning to build up in the body in the wrong places, hence the name
metastatic. It accumulates in
places such as the arteries, kidneys, brain and elsewhere.
This can be a good sign on a
retest, although it will unbalance the calcium/magnesium ratio temporarily.
If, however, the pattern shows
up on the first test and persists on the second or third test, it is likely not
the elimination of excessive calcium, but simply the spiritual defensiveness
pattern that has not been dealt with yet.
5. Other meanings. A very high calcium/magnesium ratio could be due to a kidney
imbalance that is affecting calcium and magnesium. These minerals are regulated through the kidneys, as are
most minerals.
As mentioned above, if the ratio
is extremely high, it definitely indicates more severe health imbalances.
7. Defensiveness,
in general. An elevated calcium/magnesium ratio,
especially with an elevated level of calcium and of magnesium, is indicative of
defensiveness, in general. This
was a discovery of Dr. Eck many years ago. In the spiritual defensiveness pattern, a person often is
consciously or unconsciously defending a lifestyle factor or attitude that is
not serving the person and really needs to change.
Other. Magnesium is associated with energy, while calcium is
associated with hardness and protection.
We may surmise that a spiritual defensiveness pattern is associated with
excessive protectiveness in relation to the amount of energy expended.
In other words, the person is expending too much energy and
not getting much in return.
Another way to say this is the person is putting energy out, but not
receiving much in return.
This may be the deeper meaning
of this pattern and we are investigating this imbalance in a relationship with
someone, some place, something like alcohol or even fear or anger, or another
aspect of life.
Varieties of
defensiveness. Defensiveness can be simply an attitude
of holding on to something or some idea, perhaps, usually one that one embraced
or needed for some reason in the past.
This is an aspect of simply living in the past and not wanting to
change. It is a kind of inertia of
the personality that often sets in as one gets older, in particular, although
it can occur even in a child. One
simply does what one has always done, or thinks as one has always thought. This amounts to defensiveness even if
one is not trying to defend oneÕs lifestyle or attitude. This might be called a more passive
kind of defensiveness.
However, defensiveness can also
be a more active resistance to change, or even an active running in one
direction to avoid change. This is
worse, actually, because one is actively avoiding the future, rather than just
remaining in the past our of laziness or inertia. However, it is very common, especially as one ages and tires
out. It is an important cause for
a four lows pattern, eventually, because the body gets completely worn out from
fighting and running in a completely useless manner.
SPIRITUAL
SIGNIFICANCE
The spiritual defensiveness
pattern indicates a need to move on or let go of the attitude or lifestyle
factor, rather than to defend it or to live in the past and pretend that the
situation is okay Dr. Eck felt
that the calcium/magnesium ratio had something to do with pretending or pretentiousness. In this regard, he was correct in that a person may be
pretending or imagining that a situation is correct or good when, in fact, it
is not.
PRETENDING VERSUS
IMAGINING A SITUATION IS CORRECT
Pretending
or imagining things can be a Level 3 or tuning disorder of the brain. Our brains tune to different
frequencies and different realities.
This is explained in much more depth in Nutritional balancing and Hair
Mineral Analysis, fourth edition 2010. However, imagining can also just be the product of a fertile
imagination, in which case it is more benign.
As
compared with imagining, pretending is often more of an act of will and ego
stubbornness in which one wishes something were a certain way, so one just
assumes that is the way it is, even though it is not true. It is a common human trait. Spiritual defensive pattern is often
about a stubborn will that is being misused to defend or protect an attitude or
other lifestyle factor or attitude.
AN ENDING, OR
ÔNEED TO LET GOÕ PATTERN
At
times, a spiritual defensive pattern indicates that a lifestyle condition or
attitude that had been appropriate is no longer needed or appropriate for a
person and needs to be let go of.
For example, it might be a job, a relationship or often it is an
attitude about life that simply is no longer true and it is time to let it
go.
A woman might have been angry
with an ex-boyfriend or ex-husband, for example, but that is over and now it is
time to move on. Otherwise, the
attitude of anger or cynicism just is not appropriate and is holding her back
on her life path. This is why I
call it a ending or Òneed to release somethingÓ pattern, as it means that it is
time to move on, and nothing is holding the person in the job, relationship,
situation or attitude at this time.
There may seem to be factors holding the person in the situation, but at
the deepest level there is nothing holding the person to it and one needs to
move on.
Sometimes
one may need to be in a situation, job, relationship, or have an illness or
even an attitude for some reason such as to learn some type of lesson. This pattern seems to indicate that the
situation or attitude is no longer needed or appropriate because the lesson,
debt or factor has been completed or resolved.
OTHER, MORE SUBTLE
ASPECTS OF THE PATTERN
Movement means how a person tends to
feel when in this pattern. The
feeling of spiritual defensiveness pattern is that one feels little, although
when pressed, often one is defending some kind of action behavior, situation or
attitude. One is stuck, to some
degree, but is often unconscious of this, except there may be physical or
emotional health issues.
Chakra and traditional Chinese five-element
indicators. Spiritual
defensiveness is most commonly associated with a slow oxidation rate, although
it can occur with any oxidation rate or with four lows, four highs, three highs
or three lows pattern. The pattern
is rather yin in Chinese medical terminology. It is not associated with any of the chakras, in particular.
MAGNESIUM
DEPRESSION
A spiritual defensiveness
pattern may be associated with another curious and newer observed phenomenon. At
times, a life situation that is not working well will cause a depression of the
hair magnesium level.
Physiologically,
I do not know why this would occur.
A psychological or more metaphysical reason might be that magnesium, as
an element, is bright and shining.
It is possible that when a person remains with an attitude or lifestyle
that is not appropriate for the future, somehow it Ôdims his brightnessÕ in some
way.
