I. DEFINITIONS OF COURAGE

The following definitions of courage are taken from an article in Psychology Today:

1. FEELING FEAR YET CHOOSING TO ACT

Without temptation, there can be no virtue. Without danger, there can be no courage.” - Roy Masters

Brian thought about it. 'Can one still be brave if one is afraid?' 'That is the only time one can be brave,' his father told him.” George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave person is not the one who does not feel afraid, but the one who conquers that fear." Nelson Mandela

"There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid." L.Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

"Being terrified but going ahead and doing what must be done—that's courage. The one who feels no fear is a fool, and the one who lets fear rule him is a coward." Piers Anthony

"Courage is about doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared. Have the courage to act instead of react." Oliver Wendell Holmes

2. FOLLOWING YOUR HEART

Passion is what drives us crazy, what makes us do extraordinary things, to discover, to challenge ourselves. Passion is and should always be the heart of courage.” Midori Komatsu

"And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and your intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Steve Jobs, Stanford commencement speech, June 2005

"To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. To not dare is to lose oneself."
 Soren Kierkegaard

It takes courage...to endure the sharp pains of self discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.” Marianne Williamson, "Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of 'A Course in Miracles'".

The word courage derives from the French language. The word coeur in French means the heart. Courage has to do with following your heart and doing what you know is right in your heart.

3. PERSEVERING IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY

"When we are afraid, we ought not to occupy ourselves with endeavoring to prove that there is no danger, but in strengthening ourselves to go on in spite of the danger." Mark Rutherford

"A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

"Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them." Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924)

"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, 'I'll try again tomorrow.'" Mary Anne Radmacher

'Go back?' he thought. 'No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!' So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.” Mark Twain

"I am convinced that courage is the most important of all the virtues. Because without courage, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently." - Maya Angelou

4. STANDING UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT

"Sometimes standing against evil is more important than defeating it. The greatest heroes stand because it is right to do so, not because they believe they will walk away with their lives. Such selfless courage is a victory in itself." N.D. Wilson, Dandelion Fire

"Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes." Maggie Kuhn, social activist

"From caring comes courage." Lao Tzu

5. EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS; LETTING GO OF THE FAMILIAR

"One cannot discover new oceans unless one has the courage to lose sight of the shore." Lord Chesterfield

This world demands the qualities of youth; not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the life of ease.”Robert F. Kennedy

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Anais Nin

Other words that have a similar meaning as courage are bravery and valor.

WHAT COURAGE IS NOT

To help understand a subject, it is often helpful to mention what something is not:

Courage is not just acting stupidly and placing yourself in obvious danger. In other words, it is not going forward without giving your action any thought.

Courage is also not just rebelling. Both rebellion and conformity are incorrect and just forms of reaction. Instead, discern in the light of truth and move forward from this wisdom.

II. COURAGE IN THE BIBLE

The Old and New Testaments of the Bible are wonderful sources of statements about courage. Here are some of them:

Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness.

Psalm 112:7

He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.

Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Psalm 16:8

I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword (frighten us)?

A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings. For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool; but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to all generations.” Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in days of old, the generations of long ago. Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon? Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over? And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 41:10-13

The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish. …

Isaiah 40:3-42:7

A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass.

The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Psalm 116:1-118:29

I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!” Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

III. COURAGE ACCORDING TO THE 7 SYSTEM

The 7 system can be applied to courage:

1. Physical courage. This is to move ahead with your life and plans even though you may have to endure some physical unpleasantness or hardship.

2. Emotional courage. One needs to control emotions of fear, in particular, and perhaps other emotions such as anger, in order to move ahead with courage.

3. Taking back your power. Courage has a lot to do with the third energy center, which has to do with taking back your power and taking control of your life.

4. Social courage. Courage often requires going against the crowd and not minding criticism and perhaps rejection from the masses of the people.

5. Partnerships and creative expression. Courage is very needed in marriages, work situations and business matters. This usually involves standing up for what is right and often leaving situations that require that you compromise your principles.

6. Intellectual and political courage. This is most important today and involves careful thinking without sloppiness or compromise of logic. Too much of today’s education lacks this quality, unfortunately.

7. Spiritual courage. This level of courage is about having faith in God, goodness and truth at all levels. It is a sublime trait to cultivate spiritual courage in all matters.
