The theme of this article is that the decision to have a king over the Hebrew people marked the end of one of the most important aspects of the Hebrew religion - self-government.
HISTORY
The Hebrew people were told repeatedly that they were not to have earthly kings. Instead, God would be their king. They were to have a type of decentralized governmental structure that is spelled out in the Book Of Deuteronomy.
They were warned that a king would take their young men into his army and many would be killed. They were also warned that he would take the loveliest of their young women and put them in a harem as prostitutes. In addition, they were warned that a king would steal their land and exert dictatorial control over many aspects of society.
However, around 1000 years ago, the rogues organized and demanded that the Hebrews appoint a king to rule over the people. Their arguments were false and they killed or raped those who disagreed and stood in the way.
As a result, a king was appointed in both the Northern and the Southern branches of he Hebrews. What followed was chaos and corruption that led to the decline of the entire Hebrew civilization.
This is documented in the Books Of Kings (there are two books – Kings 1 and Kings2) found in Deuteronomy.
Because self-government and a government of limited power is extremely important for human progress, prosperity and happiness. Today Western societies are rapidly moving away from this principle. We see only horror and chaos stemming from this trend and we pray daily that it stops.
